Salvia blepharophylla

The scientific name is derived from Greek and means "leaves fringed with lashes," although a magnifying glass is required to reveal them. Evergreen in warmer climates and only semi-evergreen in cooler climates, this perennial has a creeping, stoloniferous habit of 18". It features loose whorls of vibrant red flowers with just a whisper of orange. Flowers form from late spring until frost. Plant in full sun along the coast and part shade in interior situations; this is a sage that's best in well-drained soils with regular garden water—Hardy to 20° F.
