Rhynchospora colorata, often called Starrush whitetop, white star sedge, or white-topped sedge, is a lovely perennial flowering plant in the sedge family. Its delicate white bracts resemble white petals adorned with long, green points. This charming plant is native to southeastern North America, stretching from Virginia to New Mexico in the U.S. and even into the beautiful Caribbean islands.
The inflorescence features a delightful cluster of small spikes, each showcasing several tiny flowers perched on vibrant green and white bracts. These bracts may remind you of leaves, but the true leaves grow from the base of the plant, creating a nice, lush appearance. It’s a wonderful attractor for various pollinators.
Star sedge makes a striking addition to any bog or water garden. It thrives in regular garden soil as long as it has plenty of moisture. If the clumps start to take over, feel free to divide the plant. A little winter trimming helps make room for fresh spring growth, ensuring it continues to flourish.
You’ll frequently find this beautiful plant in swales, ditches, and other wet places throughout southeast Texas, the Rio Grande Plains, the Edwards Plateau, and the Trans-Pecos areas. It grows well in sand, loam, or clay, and it doesn’t mind poor drainage conditions. Sometimes, you might even see it submerged in shallow water, adding to its unique charm!

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
