Quercus texana is a lovely deciduous oak that thrives in the lush, wet bottomland soils of the floodplain forests in the Mississippi River valley. It stretches from the far western areas of Kentucky, southward through the southern tip of Illinois and the Bootheel region of Missouri, all the way to beautiful Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast from Alabama to Texas. This magnificent tree can grow between 50 to 80 feet tall, with a broad, rounded crown that offers plenty of shade. In the spring, just after the leaves begin to unfurl, you'll notice its small yellowish-green flowers blooming on separate male and female catkins. The tree produces oval acorns that reach up to 1¼ inches long, nestled in scaly cups. The dark green leaves are 4 to 8 inches long, elegantly divided into 6 to 11 pointed lobes, with distinguishable tufts of soft hair on the lower surface at the vein angles. Their leaf shape is reminiscent of the closely related pin and shumard oaks. While the fall color tends to arrive a bit late, it often showcases stunning shades of red that brighten up the landscape. Interestingly, Quercus texana, as we currently recognize it, has been synonymous with several other names, including Q. nuttallii, Q. nuttallii var. cachensis, Q. rubra var. texana, Q. shumardii var. microcarpa, and Q. shumardii var. texana, which can sometimes make things a little tricky with its nomenclature and common names.
This oak prefers rich, moist, acidic loams in full sunlight for the best growth. It's pretty adaptable, thriving in a variety of soil conditions, even heavy clay soils.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
