Camassia scilloides
Camassia scilloides, affectionately known as wild hyacinth, eastern camas, or Atlantic camas, is a delightful bulbous perennial that brings joy with its stunning blooms each spring. Typically, it grows to heights of 1-2 feet, though it occasionally stretches up to 3 feet, adding a touch of charm to any garden. This lovely plant is native to a variety of habitats, from lush, rich woods and wet open woodlands to open meadows, stream banks, limestone glades, rocky slopes, and prairies. It particularly adores areas with calcareous soil and can be found in states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Texas.
The wild hyacinth showcases narrow, grass-like leaves that are sharp-pointed and gather in a charming clump at the base. Standing tall at around 2 feet, it produces an elegant flowering stalk. The flowers bloom in a delightful pale blue to white color, filling the air with a sweet fragrance. Blooming occurs from April to May, beginning from the bottom of the raceme and moving upward. Each flower measures about 1 inch across, featuring six linear to elliptic tepals, six stamens with bright yellow anthers, and a lovely green ovary with a central style. Remarkably, a single raceme can hold up to 20 flowers! Once fertilized, the plant produces a sweet little 1/3-inch seed capsule. After the blooming season, the basal leaves gradually turn yellow and wither, gently guiding the plant into a calm dormancy during the mid-summer months.
This wonderful plant thrives in moist, fertile, slightly acidic soil rich in humus and well-drained. It flourishes best in full sun but is quite happy in open woodland conditions too. When planting, pop the bulbs 4-6 inches deep and 6 inches apart in the fall. Interestingly, it can also adapt to clay soils! It appreciates regular moisture during its spring growth and blooming phase, but don’t worry—it can manage drier conditions after flowering as it enters its summer dormancy. Once planted, it's best to let this lovely plant settle in undisturbed. If you’re keen on growing from seeds, keep in mind that it usually blooms in its third or fourth year.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
