Camassia scilloides

Camassia scilloides, more commonly known as wild hyacinth, eastern camas, or Atlantic camas, is a lovely bulbous perennial that delights us with its blooms in the spring. Typically, it grows to heights of 1-2 feet but can sometimes reach up to 3 feet, adding charm to any garden. This beautiful plant is native to various habitats, including lush, rich woods, wet open woodlands, open meadows, stream banks, limestone glades, ledges, rocky slopes, and prairies. It particularly loves areas with calcareous soil and can be spotted across states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Texas.

The wild hyacinth features narrow, linear, grass-like leaves that are sharp-pointed and gather in a lovely clump at the base. Standing tall at around 2 feet, it produces a graceful flowering stalk. The flowers, which bloom in a delightful pale blue-to-white color, also bring a sweet fragrance. The blooming occurs from April to May, starting from the bottom of the raceme and moving upward. Each flower is about 1 inch across, showcasing six linear to elliptic tepals, six stamens with yellow anthers, and a lovely green ovary with a central style. Remarkably, a single raceme can hold up to 20 flowers! Once fertilized, the plant produces a charming 1/3-inch seed capsule. After the flowering period, the basal leaves gradually turn yellow and wither, leading the plant into a gentle dormancy during the mid-summer months.

This incredible plant thrives in moist, fertile, and slightly acidic soil rich in humus and well-drained. It flourishes best in full sun but is happy in open woodland conditions. When planting, place the bulbs 4-6 inches deep and 6 inches apart in the fall. Notably, it can also adapt to clay soils. It appreciates regular moisture during its spring growth and blooming phase, but don’t worry—it can handle drier conditions after flowering as it enters its summer dormancy. Once planted, it's best to let this lovely it'st settle in undisturbed. If you’re interested in growing you'rem seeds, keep in mind that it will usually bloom in its third or fourth year!

Winter Shipping: We will continue to ship throughout winter. If you prefer, we are happy to hold your order until spring; please include that request in your shipping notes.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
