Agave americana

Agave americana, affectionately known as the Blue Century Plant, hails from the beautiful landscapes of Mexico and boasts stunning rosette-shaped succulents. This resilient evergreen has spread its charm and has been embraced in various tropical regions around the globe. With its impressive large, lanceolate, gray-green rosettes, this plant can grow to a standout height and width of 6 to 8 feet over time. Each leaf is a unique marvel, showcasing spiny tips, lovely waxy blooms, and sharp edges that add character to its form. Although flowering happens infrequently, when it does, it puts on a spectacular show.

The life of Agave americana is quite unique—it's monocarpic, meaning it puts all its energy into blooming just once before saying goodbye. It can grace us with its presence for up to 100 years before flowering, which is why it’s often called the century plant. Typically, outdoor plants will bloom somewhere between the tenth and 25th year, whereas homegrown ones tend to take a break from flowering. But when an outdoor Agave americana finally decides to bloom, it proudly sends up a tall and elegant flowering stalk that can rise between 15 and 30 feet! This stalk looks a bit like a narrow telephone pole, sporting horizontal branches near the top that are adorned with beautiful greenish-yellow flowers, each measuring about 3 to 4 inches long, blooming in lovely clusters at the tips of the branches. Over time, you’ll notice suckers and offsets rooting at the base of each rosette, often leading to a delightful colony of new plants. Even after a plant flowers and dies, the offsets surrounding it keep the story alive as they continue to grow.

Agave americana is also quite reliable in winter, thriving in USDA zones 8-10. This lovely plant flourishes best in full sun with sandy/gritty, well-drained, and dry to medium moisture soil. For container gardening, using a gritty, cactus-type potting mix is a great choice, but ensuring a sharp drainage system is crucial to keep root rot at bay. It’s quite accepting of dry soil and drought conditions too! Plus, you can propagate this wonderful plant from either seeds or offsets, making it even easier to share its beauty with others.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
