Oakleaf Hydrangea

The oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States, specifically from Georgia to Florida to Louisiana. It is known for its upright, broad-rounded growth and its pyramidal panicles of white flowers that appear in summer. The branches of the oakleaf hydrangea exfoliate, and its large, dark green leaves are 3-7 lobed and resemble those of the oak tree.

 

The name "Hydrangea" comes from the Greek words "hydro," meaning "water," and "aggeion," meaning "vessel," which refers to the cup-like capsular fruit of the plant. The specific epithet "quercifolia" alludes to the leaves' similarity to those of the oak tree.

 

Oakleaf hydrangeas thrive in organically rich, medium-moisture, well-drained soils and can grow in full sun to shade. They prefer moist soils and benefit from summer mulch to retain moisture. The plant blooms on old wood, and pruning after flowering may be necessary, although minimal pruning is typically required. In USDA Zone 5, winter protection such as mulch or burlap wrap may be needed, especially for newly established plants, as they can suffer from loss of flower buds or die to the ground in harsh winters.
