Buffalograss (Bouteloua dactyloides)
A short, 5 to 8-inch tall, sod-forming grass that can survive on as little as 12 inches of water per year. It spreads by seed and surface runners. Buffalo grass has no natural diseases or pests, doesn't respond to fertilizer, and can withstand extreme heat or cold. It is found from Minnesota and Montana to Mexico. In comparison, exotic lawn grasses like Bermuda and St. Augustine require 60 to 120 inches of water per year, need frequent mowing, regular applications of fertilizer and pesticides, and can freeze out in harsh winters.
