Muhlenbergia capillaris
Muhlenbergia capillaris, lovingly known as pink muhly grass or pink hair grass, is a delightful warm-season perennial that forms charming clumps. This grass is cherished for its stunning summer foliage and the breathtaking clouds of flowers that grace the fall landscape. Native to an array of habitats, including prairies, pine barrens, and open woodlands, it has a wide range extending from Massachusetts to Kansas and from Florida to Texas. With glossy, wiry, thread-like, dark green leaves and stems that beautifully arise from a lovely basal clump, it can grow up to 2 feet tall. Yet, it’s the fall blooms that truly make this grass shine. The airy, open, and loosely branched inflorescences, in shades of pink to pinkish-red, float gracefully above the foliage during an extended fall bloom. Even in winter, the tan seed plumes continue to add charm. When in full bloom, these plants typically reach a height and width of 3 feet.
Pink muhly grass flourishes in sandy or rocky soils that range from dry to medium-moisture, favoring well-drained conditions. While it loves basking in full sun, it can still thrive in light shade. This resilient plant can handle heat, humidity, and drought; however, it stretches taller when pampered with consistent moisture. It’s quite adaptable, tolerating poor soils and urban environments. Notably, it doesn’t spread through rhizomes and can easily be grown from seed, with propagation possible through either seed or division spring.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
