Amorpha canescens

Also known as Leadplant, Leadplant Amorpha, Prairie Shoestring

Amorpha canescens, commonly known as lead plant, is a charming native Texas species found in open woodlands, glades, and prairies. This delightful member of the pea family is a deciduous shrub reaching heights of 1-3 feet, adorned with slender clusters of small, bluish-purple flowers and bright golden anthers. These stunning blooms brighten the landscape from May to June. The plant features attractive alternate leaves that are pinnately compound, displaying soft grayish-green leaflets and fluffy, dense twigs that enhance its character.

The genus's name comes from the Greek word "amorphous," which means shapeless or deformed. This nod to the unique corolla of this pea family plant, which doesn't have the typical wings and keel, is why you'll often hear Amorpha referred to as false indigo. Due to its similar appearance to plants in the Indigofera genus, the name lead plant stems from an old belief that its presence suggests lead in the soil.

For those looking to grow this lovely plant, it thrives best in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil, and absolutely loves soaking up full sun. It has a remarkable ability to flourish in poor, sandy, somewhat dry soils and can even spread joyfully through self-seeding. During harsher winters, don't worry if your plants die back to the ground; they are resilient and will bounce back in spring.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
